WEEK OF JUNE 27, 2016

West Nile Virus Spray in Lancaster

A positive West Nile Virus mosquito trap location in the city was confirmed by Dallas County Health and Human Services for the area of McCormick, off of North Houston School Road. The City of Lancaster has coordinated with Dallas County Health and Human Services to conduct ground spraying for the area in which the positive trap was located. Ground spraying is scheduled for Wednesday, June 22, 2016; Thursday, June 23, 2016 and Sunday, June 26, 2016 between 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Although the pesticide is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency, residents are advised to take the following precautions: Minimize exposure, remain indoors during the hours while spraying is in progress. Close windows and keep pets inside. If skin or clothes are exposed, wash them with soap and water. Rinse homegrown fruits and vegetables as a precaution. Cover small ornamental fish ponds and keep outdoor pets covered. The chemical breaks down quickly in sunlight and water, so no special precautions are suggested for outdoor swimming pools.

City of Lancaster residents are provided free mosquito dunks at 700 E. Main Street and 211 N. Henry Street while supplies last. This product assists in mosquito control by killing mosquito larvae when applied to water sources. For more information about ground spraying, please call the City of Lancaster, City Hall at 972-218-1300 or visit www.lancaster-tx.com/FightTheBite.

Heat Advisory Warning for Pets

Summertime means more time for fun in the sun with friends, family, and pets. Soaring summer temperatures put pets at risk for dehydration, sunburn, burned paw pads, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The good news is these heat-related health problems can be prevented with a little knowledge, planning and precautions.

Take the following precautions to help prevent your pet from overheating:

  • In extreme heat, it is important that pets are in an air conditioned environment.
  • Never leave pets alone in a vehicle.
  • Watch for coolant leaking from your vehicle—a pet drinking just a small amount can cause death.
  • Do not force your animal to exercise after a meal in hot, humid weather. Limit exercise to the early morning or evening hours.
  • Never leave your pet standing on asphalt surfaces, as they can burn their paws.
For questions, please contact the Animal Shelter at 972-218-1210

Free Lessons on basic computer features
