July 4th Celebration at Community Park
On Monday, July 4, 2016, the City of Lancaster, in partnership with the City of Desoto, will host an Independence Day Celebration with family fun, food and fireworks at Community Park, located at 1700 Veterans Memorial Parkway. This traditional patriotic salute is free and open to the entire community. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of live entertainment, food, children’s activities, vendor booths, and a spectacular fireworks show! The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and the festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m., concluding at 10:00 p.m.
Performances by:
N’Tense: Led by Sean G. and Tomea's smooth and melodic voices and amazing range, N'Tense has become a versatile band for all types of music. They are sure to bring you an energizing show that will satisfy your appetite for R&B, Hip Hop, Soul, Blues, Funk and Smooth Jazz.
Three Quarters Fast Band: Dave Washburn's Three Quarters Fast Jazz Band is a 6 piece band who will entertain with fun & lively traditional New Orleans jazz & swing, big band numbers and croon tunes of the 20's thru 40's. This band is sure to keep you dancing all night!
Shaun Martin and the Band: As an accomplished Classical, R&B, Jazz, and Gospel keyboard player, Shan Martin is a Grammy award winning artist who will deliver soothing sounds that will electrify and entertain any crowd. If good music is what your heart desires, Shaun Martin will deliver!

Trash-Off Event
The City of Lancaster is committed to continue being clean and green, while providing a healthy and safe environment for its citizens. In support of “Keep Lancaster Beautiful” and the Great American Clean-up efforts, the City of Lancaster welcomes residents to participate in its upcoming Trash Off on Saturday, July 16, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 1501 N. Dallas Avenue (next to Regions Bank). The Trash Off is a great opportunity for Lancaster residents to clean their home, garage, and yard of bulk trash, recyclables, scrap metal, brush, and electronic waste (i.e. computers, kitchen appliances, televisions, etc.) for disposal FREE of cost. Focusing on creating more opportunities to become a greener city and reducing our carbon foot print, Goodwill Industries of Dallas will be on-site accepting donations of furniture, clothes, and household items that would otherwise end up in landfills. The Trash Off is also a wonderful opportunity for individuals, groups, and organizations to volunteer to clean-up trash in selected areas of Lancaster. All volunteers will receive complimentary lunch and a volunteer t-shirt on the day of the event.
Residents disposing of appliances must have refrigerant removed and tagged by a certified technician. Each patron will be allowed to bring up to 10 tires for free disposal and each additional tire will be $5 (no commercial or business tires please). Household hazardous wastes (Oil, liquids, paint, chemicals, fertilizers etc.) will NOT be accepted at this event. This program is open to Lancaster residents only with proof of residency. Heat Advisory Warning for Pets
Summertime means more time for fun in the sun with friends, family, and pets. Soaring summer temperatures put pets at risk for dehydration, sunburn, burned paw pads, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The good news is these heat-related health problems can be prevented with a little knowledge, planning and precautions.
Take the following precautions to help prevent your pet from overheating:
In extreme heat, it is important that pets are in an air conditioned environment.
Never leave pets alone in a vehicle.
Watch for coolant leaking from your vehicle—a pet drinking just a small amount can cause death.
Do not force your animal to exercise after a meal in hot, humid weather. Limit exercise to the early morning or evening hours.
Never leave your pet standing on asphalt surfaces, as they can burn their paws.

Zika Virus Precautions
Pregnant?
If you develop the symptoms of Zika, see a healthcare provider right away for testing. Testing is recommended for pregnant women at their first prenatal care visit.
Your Best Protection: Prevent Mosquito Bites
Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items.
Treated clothing remains protective after multiple washings. If treating items yourself, follow the product instructions carefully.
Do NOT use permethrin products directly on skin. They are intended to treat clothing.
Indoor Protection:
Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. Sleep under a mosquito bed net if air conditioned or screened rooms are not available or if sleeping outdoors.
Repellent:
Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)- registered insect repellents. When used as directed, these insect repellents are safe and effective for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Lancaster Eyes & Ears Program:
The City of Lancaster Code Compliance Division is seeking volunteers to join the Lancaster Eyes and Ears program (LEEP)
The LEEP program will primarily perform duties in the field identifying code violations for code officers to perform further investigation. The program is intended to have volunteers aid city staff in improving and preserving the quality of life in our community. These volunteers will help act as the “eyes and ears” in residential and commercial neighborhoods to staff code compliance officers. Citizens are key to identifying potentially serious problems.
Qualifications:
Volunteers are requested to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours per week. Work schedules are flexible based on your availability but are limited to daytime hours. Volunteers must possess a Texas class “C” driver’s license, successfully complete a background check and drug test, and reside in the City of Lancaster.

Streets are maintained by the city, but the repair and replacement of damaged sidewalk slabs are the responsibility of the homeowner whose property is adjacent to the sidewalk. To help with that responsibility, the City of Lancaster offers property owners the opportunity to improve the appearance and safety of their homes and neighborhoods with the 50/50 cost sharing Sidewalk Replacement Program.

Storm Water Pollution Prevention
•The best way to protect stormwater runoff quality is to avoid polluting in the first place. Conserve and recycle resources such as newspaper, plastic containers, glass jars, and metal cans.
•Practice street sweeping, picking up litter, and disposing of leaves and yard waste.
•Keep grass clippings, leaves, lawn care, automotive and household’s chemicals out of the storm drain system. Participate in local garbage and debris pickup days; recycle household’s hazardous waste materials to prevent storm drain contamination.
•Prevent sewage overflows to the streams by diverting drains away from the sanitary sewer system. Report any overflows to the Wastewater Department.

Storm/Tornado Shelters
The Lancaster Fire Department is seeking information about the locations of Storm/Tornado shelters in our city. This information is voluntary and will be used in the event there is a tornado or severe weather in the City and you get trapped in the shelter. The Fire department will know to search for you and your family not only in the home but in the shelter as well.
