WEEK OF JULY 25, 2016
[http://www.cleartheshelters.org/]
New Exhibit at the Visitors Center
The City of Lancaster is pleased to announce Jonathon Foster’s exhibit: “The Blacker the Berry”, now on display at the Lancaster Visitors Center and State Auxiliary Museum. This exhibition (previously on display at the African American Museum in Historic Fair Park) highlights the contributions of leading African American women locally, statewide and nationally. Artist/Educator Jonathon Foster conveys the combination of beauty in varying colorful portraits portrayed in a complex surrealist style, which is reflective of the role the African American woman plays and the image she portrays. With displays beginning from pre-emancipation proclamation era and extending into modern day, “The Blacker the Berry” provides an in depth look at the role of African American women in the cultural emergence of Black Society in America. Visit the museum for the next 180 days and enjoy paintings of iconic legends such as Stage Coach Mary, Madam CJ Walker, Ida B Wells, Kathryn Guilliam, Shirley Chisolm, Oprah Winfrey and State Representative Helen Giddings and others as we celebrate their accomplishments to society.
The Visitors Center and State Auxiliary Museum is located at 103 N. Dallas Avenue and open for business Monday - Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
For questions, please contact the Visitors Center and Auxiliary Museum at 972-218-3790.

Parks and Recreation Month
For the month of July, the City of Lancaster is celebrating Parks and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and all the ways parks and recreation has the power to transform our daily lives. From providing us places to get fit and stay healthy to fostering new relationships and forging a connection with nature, our close-to-home community park and recreation facilities provide essential services and improve quality of life. The superhero theme highlights the fact that Parks and Recreation have the power to strengthen communities, transform lives and protect the future. When our powers combine, we change lives!
The following is a list of the exciting things going on in your parks and recreation department this month to celebrate:
Become “AQUA MAN” by learning how to swim in our Indoor Family Aquatic Center. A scholarship for swim lessons is available. Contact the Lancaster Recreation Center at 972-218-3700 for more information.

NRPA is celebrating the month by hosting a selfie photo contest. From July 4-31, NRPA will issue weekly challenges for people to get out in their parks and recreation facilities and discover their super powers. Weekly prizes will be awarded. The contest can be entered via Facebook or by uploading a photo to Twitter and Instagram using #SuperJuly and #SuperParkSelfie. Visit www.nrpa.org/July for official rules and details.

Proper Cart Placement
With our automated service, cart placement is extremely important to guarantee our trucks can access them for pickup on collection days. The mechanical arm on the garbage trucks needs to have clear access to your cart(s). Proper cart placement also ensures your cart(s) are not missed on your scheduled collection day.
Place your garbage and/or recycling in the cart(s) provided to you by Community Waste Disposal (CWD). Trash inside the gray cart and recycle inside the blue cart.
Set out your cart(s) by 7:00 am of your collection day and remove by 8:00 pm on the same day.
Allow 3ft clearance around the cart(s) with handle facing toward your property.
Do not overfill or place things outside of your cart(s). Lid must be closed.
Secure all trash in plastic bags.
If you have an excessive garbage on a continuous basis, you will be required to have an additional cart. Click HERE [http://lancaster-tx.com/1118/Order-Additional-Carts] to view the additional cart fee.

Heat Advisory Warning for Pets
Summertime means more time for fun in the sun with friends, family, and pets. Soaring summer temperatures put pets at risk for dehydration, sunburn, burned paw pads, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The good news is these heat-related health problems can be prevented with a little knowledge, planning and precautions.
Take the following precautions to help prevent your pet from overheating:
In extreme heat, it is important that pets are in an air conditioned environment.
Never leave pets alone in a vehicle.
Watch for coolant leaking from your vehicle—a pet drinking just a small amount can cause death.
Do not force your animal to exercise after a meal in hot, humid weather. Limit exercise to the early morning or evening hours.
Never leave your pet standing on asphalt surfaces, as they can burn their paws.
For questions, please contact the Animal Shelter at 972-218-1210

Zika Virus Precautions
Pregnant?
If you develop the symptoms of Zika, see a healthcare provider right away for testing. Testing is recommended for pregnant women at their first prenatal care visit.
Your Best Protection: Prevent Mosquito Bites
Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items.
Treated clothing remains protective after multiple washings. If treating items yourself, follow the product instructions carefully.
Do NOT use permethrin products directly on skin. They are intended to treat clothing.
Indoor Protection:
Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. Sleep under a mosquito bed net if air conditioned or screened rooms are not available or if sleeping outdoors.
Repellent:
Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)- registered insect repellents. When used as directed, these insect repellents are safe and effective for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Storm Water Pollution Prevention
•The best way to protect stormwater runoff quality is to avoid polluting in the first place. Conserve and recycle resources such as newspaper, plastic containers, glass jars, and metal cans.
•Practice street sweeping, picking up litter, and disposing of leaves and yard waste.
•Keep grass clippings, leaves, lawn care, automotive and household’s chemicals out of the storm drain system. Participate in local garbage and debris pickup days; recycle household’s hazardous waste materials to prevent storm drain contamination.
•Prevent sewage overflows to the streams by diverting drains away from the sanitary sewer system. Report any overflows to the Wastewater Department at 972-275-1752.
