Thanksgiving Day - City Offices Closed
In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, the City of Lancaster offices will be closed Thursday, November 24, 2016 and Friday, November 25, 2016. City offices will reopen Monday, November 28, 2016 at 8am.
Refuse for Thursday, November 24th will be collected on Friday, November 25th.

Proper Grease Disposal
Many of our favorite Thanksgiving foods, such as turkey, sauces, dressing, dairy products and baked goods, contain fats, oils and grease. After the Thanksgiving meal is cooked and eaten, these fats, oils, and grease are often poured down the sink or garbage disposals that are not designed to properly handle these materials.
Why isn’t pouring grease down the drain a good idea? After the grease is poured down the drain, it will stick to the sides of sewer pipes, both on your property and in the public sewer system. Over time, the grease will build up and block the pipes, causing the public sewer system to stop working properly.
MSD (Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District) estimates that about 15 percent of blockages in its public sewer system are caused by fats, oils and grease.
Here are some easy ways to keep fats, oils and grease out of the public sewer system:
- Refrain from pouring grease down sink drains.
- Scrape all excess food and grease from plates and other utensils into the trash.
- Collect grease in a container. Cool it in the fridge and dispose of in the trash.

63rd Annual Christmas Parade
Beginning at the Lancaster Historic Town Square in Lancaster, Texas, the annual Lancaster Christmas Parade and Festival is an event filled with traditions not to be missed. Activities include the lighting of the town Christmas tree, pictures with Santa, cookie baking, hay rides and a visit to Santa’s workshop. For the health-conscious, the annual Healthy Heart for the Holidays hosted at the Lancaster Recreation Center features wellness checks and fitness demos.

Say NO to Illegal Dumping!
What is Illegal Dumping?
Illegal Dumping occurs when a person places, deposits, dumps or accumulates refuse on or in any public or private street, public right-of-way or easement, gutter or sidewalk within the Lancaster City limits.
Why is Illegal Dumping a problem?
When illegal dumping occurs, the damage to neighborhoods and the environment can be severe:
- Property values decline.
- Unreported illegal dumping often results in more illegal dumping.
- Illegally dumped material can become a breeding ground for vectors, such as mice, rats and mosquitoes, which can spread diseases such as encephalitis, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and West Nile Disease.
- Illegal dumping is hazardous to the environment. From refrigerators to tires to auto parts to televisions, many contain heavy metals and other toxins.
- Illegal dumping piles pose a traffic hazard when left in the public right-of-way.
- Illegal dumping costs taxpayers money.
Legal Alternatives to dispose of your unwanted items:
- Take your waste to the CWD transfer station located at 2010 California Crossing Dallas, TX 75220. A copy of your water bill is required.
- Order a special pick up at 972-218-1300. This allows residents to schedule a pickup of bulky waste for a fee.
- Take advantage of the Trash-off events (November 5th).
- Move the unwanted items away from public view until the next Bulk/brush collection.

Get Your Family Tree Growing Again
Welton R. and Mildred Chapman Fail were untiring supporters of the Lancaster Genealogical Society and the Lancaster Library. The Fails worked vigorously to replace the research material lost during the April 25, 1994 tornado. The genealogy section was named after them when the library moved into its new building in 2001. The Genealogical Resource Center contains a collection of materials for family history research. The materials come in a variety of formats such as books, CDs, microfilm, microfiche, brochures, and electronic resources. Please call 972-227-1080 for questions.

Lancaster Eyes & Ears Program:
The City of Lancaster Code Compliance Division is seeking volunteers to join the Lancaster Eyes and Ears program (LEEP)
The LEEP program will primarily perform duties in the field identifying code violations for code officers to perform further investigation. The program is intended to have volunteers aid city staff in improving and preserving the quality of life in our community. These volunteers will help act as the “eyes and ears” in residential and commercial neighborhoods to staff code compliance officers. Citizens are key to identifying potentially serious problems.
Qualifications:
Volunteers are requested to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours per week. Work schedules are flexible based on your availability but are limited to daytime hours. Volunteers must possess a Texas class “C” driver’s license and successfully complete a background check, and reside in the City of Lancaster.
