Animal Shelter Advisory Committee

The Animal Shelter Advisory Committee (ASAC) plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being of animals in our community. This dedicated group of volunteers advises the City Council on animal shelter operations, policies, and animal welfare initiatives. They actively work to:

  • Develop and recommend policies that promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
  • Facilitate animal adoptions through community outreach programs and adoption events.
  • Advise on shelter operations and volunteer opportunities.

Board Members

The ASAC is comprised of five (5) regular members, including one (1) designated alternate member. Three (3) members are appointed by the City of Lancaster and three (3) members are appointed by the City of Hutchins. The committee is designed to represent a variety of perspectives and expertise in animal welfare:

Recommended Knowledge, Backgrounds, and Qualifications:

  • At least one (1) licensed veterinarian
  • At least one (1) county or municipal official
  • At least one (1) person whose duties include the daily operation of an animal shelter
  • At least one (1) representative from an animal welfare organization

Meetings / Terms: 

The ASAC typically meets at least three (3) times a year and as needed, on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Animal Shelter Community Room. Meeting agendas are available online [Agenda and Minutes | Lancaster, TX - Official Website (lancaster-tx.com)]

  • Terms: Members of the Animal Shelter Advisory Committee members serve two-year terms for the five regular positions. Alternate positions serve one-year terms.

The public is encouraged to attend the Animal Shelter Advisory Committee. Typically, there will be designated public comment periods during the meeting where residents can voice their concerns, suggestions, or questions.
